The main problem here was the loss of detail in the face of the subject due to fading. After removing simple damage e.g. creases and spots, the contrast was very lightly enhanced. A mask of the face was created, various techniques were applied to this mask to bring out the remaining detail. The mask was then combined with the original to improve the overall image. Rather than present the photograph as a greyscale image it was decided to soften the colouring towards sepia .
